Paramilitaries in Sudan have killed over 200 civilians in recent attacks on displacement camps and around the city of El Fasher in the Darfur region. The deaths include at least 56 civilians killed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the town of Um Kadadah, which they seized from army forces.
The violence is among the worst in the Darfur region since the civil war began two years ago. UN agencies have reported that killings continue in displacement camps, including attacks on medical staff at a clinic operated by Relief International. The RSF has burned buildings throughout Zamzam camp and claimed to be seeking Sudanese government fighters hiding in the area.
The US and UK have condemned both sides in the conflict, with the US stating that the RSF has committed genocide in Darfur. The UN’s Humanitarian Research Lab reported that arson attacks have destroyed significant areas of the Zamzam camp.
A recent conference on Sudan is set to address civilian protection amid rising tensions. Experts warn that the escalating violence could lead to further atrocities and require urgent diplomatic action.
