A new comet, officially known as C/2025 F2 (SWAN), is making its way towards Earth, offering a rare opportunity for sky watchers to catch a glimpse. Named SWAN25F, the green-tinted comet was detected on March 29 using the European Space Agency’s SOHO spacecraft and orbits the sun every 1.4 million years.
This “once-in-a-lifetime event” is visible now and will gradually brighten as it approaches its closest pass to Earth and the sun on May 1. Look for SWAN25F in the east-northeast horizon just before sunrise, using binoculars or a small telescope. If it survives its encounter with the sun, it may become visible during sunset.
To spot the comet, use the constellations as a guide. It’s currently located within the Great Square of Pegasus and will pass by Alpha Andromedae (Alpheratz) around April 13. Mark your calendars for this rare celestial event.
