Meta Platforms has announced that it will use interactions with its AI, as well as public posts and comments from adults across its platforms, to train artificial intelligence models in the European Union. The move comes after a delay caused by regulatory concerns over data protection and privacy.
The company had initially launched its AI technology in Europe last month but faced hurdles due to the EU’s strict rules on transparency and data handling. Users will now receive notifications explaining how their data will be used, as well as an option to object to its use for training purposes.
However, Meta has assured that it will not use sensitive data, such as private messages or posts from users under 18. Instead, the company will harness user queries, questions on AI platforms, and public data from accounts of adults.
The decision follows criticism from advocacy groups NOYB and other regulatory bodies in Ireland, which have urged caution over the use of social media content for training purposes. Elon Musk’s X and Alphabet’s Google are also under investigation by Irish regulators over similar concerns.
This move highlights the ongoing debate around AI development and data protection, with Meta seeking to balance innovation with regulatory requirements.
