The Breakfast Club cast reunited last weekend in Chicago, marking a milestone for the iconic John Hughes teen comedy. The Brain (Anthony Michael Hall), Princess (Molly Ringwald), Basket Case (Ally Sheedy), and Criminal (Judd Nelson) had previously gathered at fan conventions, but Emilio Estevez always missed them. However, this time he made an appearance.
Estevez explained that his initial reluctance to attend reunions stemmed from guilt over feeling left out. “Somebody told me Molly said I didn’t like the group,” he joked. In reality, Estevez was trying to distance himself from his teen star past and the Brat Pack label. He even cut actor Andrew McCarthy out of a film project due to concerns about being typecast.
Estevez expressed regret over being dubbed a member of the Brat Pack in a New York Magazine profile. “It was naïve of me to think this journalist would be my friend,” he admitted. “I had already seen a different path for myself, and I felt derailed.”
However, Estevez finally feels ready to confront his past and attend reunions like the one in Chicago. The reunion coincided with the 40th anniversary of the film’s release and took place in the city where it was made. “This was just something that finally I felt I needed to do, just for myself,” Estevez said. “But this one felt special.”
