A pair of solar eruptions are headed towards Earth, potentially bringing a strong geomagnetic storm that could make the northern lights visible to more New Englanders. However, cloud cover is a major factor, especially with a nearby storm looming.
The Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) has issued a moderate G2-level geomagnetic storm watch for Tuesday evening into early Wednesday morning. Forecaster Shawn Dahl said there is a fair measure of confidence in the northern lights appearing due to the Earth-directed components of two CMEs departing the sun on Saturday and Sunday.
Cloud cover will play a significant role in determining the visibility of the northern lights, making the event largely dependent on weather conditions.
