Trump Urges FCC to Fine CBS Over 60 Minutes Segments

President Donald Trump has lashed out at CBS and “60 Minutes” again, this time accusing the network of “unlawful and illegal behavior”. He is urging the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr to impose substantial fines on the network.

Trump’s comments come after two 60 Minutes segments, one featuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and another on Greenland, where residents expressed opposition to US annexation. Trump claims that 60 Minutes’ coverage of Ukraine and Greenland is defamatory and distorts history.

The segments have been widely criticized for their factual accuracy, with Zelensky inviting Trump to visit Ukraine to see the effects of Russian aggression. In the Greenland segment, residents said “Greenland is for Greenlanders, not for anybody else”.

Trump’s lawsuit against CBS over an interview with Kamala Harris has been deemed frivolous by many legal observers. The network denies claims that it made Harris look better in the interview.

The FCC has launched an inquiry into the 60 Minutes Harris segment, but its authority is narrow and it cannot engage in censorship or infringe on First Amendment rights.

Trump’s comments are seen as an effort to pressure CBS and the FCC Chairman into taking action against the network. This comes amid reports that a mediator has been selected to try to reach a settlement in Trump’s lawsuit against CBS over the Harris interview.

The situation highlights the ongoing tension between the Trump administration and the media, with Trump frequently targeting CBS and other networks for their coverage of his presidency.
