Meteor Activity Predictions this Weekend

The moon will be at its full phase on Sunday, April 13th, offering a chance to view meteor activity between dusk and moonrise. However, the low meteor activity during this period means that only a few meteors will be visible each hour.

For evening observers in mid-northern latitudes (45N), the estimated total hourly rates should be near 1, while those in tropical southern locations (25S) can expect rates of up to 2. Morning observers will see higher rates, with estimates ranging from 3-7 per hour, depending on location.

Several meteor showers are active this weekend, including the alpha Virginids, Anthelion, delta Herculids, zeta Cygnids, nu Cygnids, April epsilon Delphinids, and eta Aquariids. These showers have hourly rates that range from less than 1 to 7 per hour, depending on location.

To identify meteors with these showers, observers can use tables provided by the International Meteor Organization (IMO) or other resources. The IMO’s 2025 Meteor Shower Calendar is also a useful tool for identifying shower associations.

Viewing tips include focusing on the radiant position, which is best seen when it is positioned highest in the sky. Observers should also center their field of view to easily trace the path of each meteor back to the radiant or in another direction if it’s sporadic.

Keep track of meteor activity this weekend by visiting the NASA Meteor Shower Portal, which provides real-time data and interactive tools to help observers plan their viewing sessions.
