Hungary’s conservative government has banned public pride events organized by LGBT activists after passing a new constitutional amendment designed to protect children from gender ideology. The amendment, which was easily passed with a final vote of 140-21, prohibits LGBT pride parades that lawmakers argue threaten the well-being of children.
The measure was spearheaded by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s coalition and is part of his ongoing efforts to crack down on the LGBT movement in Hungary. In 2021, the Fidesz party banned media depictions of homosexuality or gender reassignment surgeries geared towards minors.
Under the new amendment, Hungarian authorities can use facial recognition software to identify and fine demonstrators at prohibited pride parades. The measure also explicitly defines sex as male and female, effectively preventing a citizen’s sex status from being legally changed.
The move has sparked protests around the country and is expected to draw more outrage. Orbán’s spokesman described the change as aimed at ensuring coherence in state administration and social organization, but critics argue it is an attack on individual self-expression. The amendment marks the 15th change to Hungary’s constitution since 2011.
