RFK Jr. Holds First Vaccine Advisory Meeting After Delays

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s tenure as head of the Department of Health and Human Services has brought vaccine policy decisions under public scrutiny. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s advisory committee on immunization practices finally met publicly to discuss the nation’s vaccine policies.

The initial meeting, initially scheduled for February, was postponed, sparking concerns about potential interference in vaccine policy. However, a two-day meeting is now underway, with the committee shaping access to and insurance coverage for vaccines.

The CDC staff will present data on various vaccines, including HPV, COVID-19, and flu vaccines. The independent advisors will vote on recommendations, excluding a vote on influenza vaccines initially proposed.

Experts say they expect an open discussion as usual but express concerns about potential political interference affecting CDC staff who facilitate the meetings, particularly after extensive layoffs. They will closely monitor changes in conflict of interest handling and discussions time limits.

Vaccine advocates worry that policy shifts may reduce confidence in vaccines. Dr. Anthony Fiore, a former CDC official, believes Kennedy’s stance on vaccine safety has cast doubt on their effectiveness. He emphasizes the importance of public confidence to maintain vaccination levels and protect against disease transmission.
