Google’s latest code reveals that Gemini on Wear OS is more of an Assistant rebrand than a overhaul. Users can expect a similar experience with summoning Gemini using the side button or “Hey Google” wake word, as well as accessing a similar Wear OS Tile and settings.
The upcoming feature will bring many of the same functionality as Google’s current Assistant, including setting alarms, timers, and messaging contacts. However, it is unclear if Gemini will introduce new features or just provide a fresh coat of paint to existing Assistant tricks.
While Gemini on Android phones has brought more advanced capabilities, such as LLM-generated responses, Wear OS devices are limited by their hardware constraints. The recent code snippets show that Gemini for Wear OS will follow the same command structure as Assistant and won’t introduce new on-device commands due to the limitations of current devices.
It is hoped that future Pixel Watch hardware with improved AI capabilities will lead to better Gemini tricks and extensions, but for now, Google needs to focus on making Gemini work on current Android watches with limited hardware.
