Joe Dumars Emerges as Top Contender for Pelicans’ Head of Basketball Ops

Former Detroit Pistons star and Hall of Famer Joe Dumars is reportedly a “serious frontrunner” to become the New Orleans Pelicans’ head of basketball operations, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. This move comes after the team fired David Griffin following a disappointing 21-61 season.

Dumars has previously led the Pistons’ basketball operations for 14 years, winning an NBA title in 2004 and being named NBA Executive of the Year in 2003. He currently oversees basketball operations for the NBA and has also held roles with the Sacramento Kings.

The Pelicans are seeking a new leader after Griffin’s departure, which marked the fourth-worst record in the NBA this season. Dumars’ success during his time at the Pistons includes helping the team win back-to-back titles in 1989-90 and earning MVP honors in the 1989 NBA Finals.

If successful, Dumars would bring extensive experience to the Pelicans’ front office, including a proven track record of playoff success with the Pistons. His induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006 underscores his lasting impact on the sport.
