Andrew Cuomo, a mayoral aspirant and former governor, has been denied more than $2 million in public matching campaign funds just two months before the June primary election. The decision is due to a technical error that caused contributions from his campaign to be missing required fields.
Cuomo’s spokesperson attributed the issue to a “technical software error” that prevented the campaign from receiving matching funds despite meeting the necessary thresholds. The campaign raised $1.5 million in 13 days, but the error resulted in eligible funds being withheld.
The Cuomo campaign had sent an urgent email to its entire mailing list requesting additional documentation to qualify for matching funds. Despite leading polls and securing endorsements from top unions and politicians, Cuomo’s primary election chances may be hurt by the denial of these funds.
Other candidates who received public matching funds include Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani, Comptroller Brad Lander, Scott Stringer, and State Sen. Zellnor Myrie, while Mayor Eric Adams and former assemblymember Michael Blake were denied due to missing paperwork and documentation issues.
