Harvey Weinstein is back on trial in a New York courtroom, facing charges of sex crimes against three women. Jury selection began on Tuesday, and approximately 140 prospective jurors were initially considered before about 40 remained.
Weinstein’s third trial in just over five years has sparked concerns among observers, following his previous convictions in New York and California. Last year, an appeals court overturned his sentence after finding the trial judge had improperly allowed certain testimony from witnesses. The Manhattan District Attorney has since announced an additional grand jury indictment.
Two alleged victims, former actress Jessica Mann and producer Miriam “Mimi” Haley, are expected to testify, along with a third accuser whose identity remains unknown. Weinstein’s defense team argues that they will prove the acts were not consensual, while his lawyers have petitioned for him to stay at Bellevue Hospital due to health issues.
Weinstein, 73, has recently undergone treatment for bone marrow cancer and emergency heart surgery. The trial is expected to last five days, with Weinstein maintaining his innocence throughout. The case marks a new chapter in the ongoing saga of Weinstein’s alleged misconduct, which has sparked widespread controversy and led to his downfall as a prominent figure in Hollywood.
