Spotify experienced a major outage on Wednesday, leaving tens of thousands of users unable to stream music on the app. The streaming platform reported technical problems for several hours before resolving them.
According to Downdetector, there were over 48,000 reports of the outage worldwide at its peak. Users in the UK saw their numbers skyrocket after problems began 30 minutes earlier. By 3pm BST, the issue had decreased significantly, with fewer than 10,000 reports remaining.
Spotify confirmed that the service was back online by 5:08pm, stating “All clear – thanks for your patience.” Some users reported being able to play downloaded music without issues, but many struggled with slow or unresponsive app performance. A timeout message displayed when attempting to search for music, prompting frustration among users.
Many users expressed their annoyance on social media, interrupting plans such as gym sessions and study routines. The streaming platform attributed the outage to a technical issue and assured users that it was working to resolve it as soon as possible.
Spotify denied reports of the outage being caused by a security hack. The company stated that it had addressed the search function issue and is rolling out an update to its users.
