A full moon is special tonight as observers can witness both a micromoon and a pink moon. The micromoon occurs when the full moon is farthest from Earth, resulting in it appearing 14% smaller and 30% dimmer than a supermoon.
The micromoon will be at its most illuminated at 8:22 p.m. ET on Saturday. However, it will be visible throughout the night. Cloud conditions are forecasted, but check the National Weather Service’s graphics for updates.
The pink moon gets its name from the blooming of creeping phlox flowers in early spring. It has no relation to the moon’s color. A micromoon is followed by a moon-smile and a super new moon in April.
Notably, this micromoon will be part of a rare celestial event on April 27, when the moon will pass within nearly 17,000 miles closer than its average distance. This event will also create a smile in the eastern sky with Venus and Saturn, but it will be invisible to those on Earth.
