Congo Mysterious Flu-Like Disease Kills 143 People

A mysterious flu-like disease has killed 143 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to authorities. The cases are centered in the country’s southwestern province of Kwango, where over 376 people have been infected since late October.

Those who were infected experienced symptoms similar to the flu, including high fever and severe headaches. Women and children under 15 appear to be most severely affected. A team of epidemiological experts is being sent to the region to collect samples and investigate.

The country reported a recent outbreak of mpox in 2023, with over 14,000 cases and 650 deaths. However, this new disease appears to be distinct from mpox, as it primarily affects women and children. The World Health Organization has been notified of the outbreak, which is currently being investigated by health experts.
