Pirates of Penzance to Sail into Davenport’s St. Ambrose University

Davenport’s St. Ambrose University will present the classic operetta The Pirates of Penzance, a beloved Gilbert & Sullivan masterpiece, from April 25 through May 4 in its Studio Theatre.

The show is set during the reign of King Richard IV and tells the story of Frederic, a pirate apprentice who falls in love with Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley. However, Frederic’s dedication to his fellow pirates is unshakeable, creating a conflict between his duty and his love for Mabel.

Directed by Professor Daniel Hale, the production features a talented cast of student performers, faculty members, and SAU alumni. The show boasts an interactive and immersive in-the-round experience, with the audience encouraged to participate in sound effects and prop usage.

Starring St. Ambrose alumnus Charles Murphy as Frederic, the production includes notable performances by professors Chris Schwartz as The Pirate King, Philip Goldfarb Styrt as Samuel, and John Stachula as Sergeant of Police. Admission is $15, with performances Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m.

Audiences can expect a delightful blend of sentimental pirates, blundering policemen, absurd adventures, and improbable paradoxes, all set to familiar operatic tunes like “Poor Wan’dring One” and the iconic “I Am the Very Model (of a Modern Major General)”.
