Nationals’ Lopez Suspended for Intentionally Throwing at McCutchen

Washington Nationals reliever Jorge Lopez has been suspended three games by Major League Baseball (MLB) after intentionally throwing at Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen during a game on Wednesday. Lopez had filed an appeal, meaning he will be eligible to play in the series finale against Washington.

The incident occurred in the seventh inning when Lopez hit Pirates’ Bryan Reynolds with a 92 mph pitch before facing McCutchen, who nearly avoided being struck by the ball near his head. The argument between Lopez and McCutchen led to both benches emptying.

Nationals manager Dave Martinez was also suspended for one game by MLB. Cruz’s grand slam in the inning helped Pittsburgh secure a 6-1 victory over Washington.
