Gabriel Martinelli scored a late winner for Arsenal in their 2-1 Champions League victory over Real Madrid at the Bernabeú stadium, sending them through to the semifinals.
The Brazilian striker’s goal sealed a 5-1 aggregate win over the holders, ending a 14-year wait for the Gunners. Martinelli’s equaling of Thierry Henry’s record as Arsenal’s all-time leading scorer made the moment even sweeter.
“It’s a dream come true,” said Martinelli, who struck his second Champions League goal of the season in the process. “This is one of those nights that will stay with us forever.”
The victory marked a significant scalp for Arteta’s side, who were considered underdogs against 15-time winners Madrid. “Beating Real Madrid in one of the knockout games is something for very few people,” Martinelli added.
Arsenal face Paris Saint-Germain in the semifinals, with their opening leg set for April 29 at the Emirates Stadium. The French side edged out Aston Villa 5-4 on aggregate to reach the last four.
