Eagles GM Howie Roseman Explains NFL Draft Trade Anomaly

In a rare occurrence, all 32 NFL teams still possess their first-round picks as of this week out from the 2025 NFL Draft. This is the first time since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 that every team has maintained its top selection. Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman attributes the lack of trade activity to the fact that many trades happen the year prior to the draft, often involving quarterback prospects.

Roseman notes that teams tend to focus on last year’s draft class, as future first-round picks are usually traded the previous season. He believes this trend is more related to the 2024 QB class, which saw six quarterbacks selected within the first 12 picks. This has led many teams to wait until closer to the draft to make trades.

Despite a considered weak quarterback class, with only Miami’s Cam Ward guaranteed to go No. 1 overall, some teams are expected to push up their draft boards for quarterback prospects like Colorado’s Shadeur Sanders and Jaxson Dart of Ole Miss. However, top prospects like Travis Hunter and Abdul Carter from Colorado and Penn State respectively remain in contention at higher picks.

The Eagles’ GM expects the trade market to become more active on draft day, as teams are likely to jockey for position closer to the draft date. Roseman attributes this trend to the uncertainty surrounding quarterback prospect movements.
