Tesla Falsely Inflates Odometer Readings to Avoid Repairs

Tesla is facing a proposed class action lawsuit alleging it intentionally speeds up odometers on its vehicles, making them fall out of warranty faster and avoiding costly repairs. The case involves Nyree Hinton, who claims his 2020 Model Y’s odometer was inaccurate from the start.

Hinton says his vehicle’s odometer would increase by 72 miles each day, even though he only drove around 20 miles. He believes this is at least a 15% error rate, which caused his warranty to expire prematurely and led to a $10,000 repair bill. Hinton seeks compensatory and punitive damages for himself and over one million Tesla drivers in California.

This issue has been raised before, with Tesla previously accused of inflating vehicle driving ranges. The company denied allegations of odometer manipulation this time around, but forum discussions suggest widespread concerns about the accuracy of its mileage data.
