Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has announced that troops will remain in security zones they established by seizing large areas of Gaza even after an end to the war. The zones serve as a “buffer” to protect Israeli communities from potential threats. Despite warnings from the UN about devastating consequences, Israel plans to continue its six-week blockade on humanitarian aid.
Gaza’s health ministry has reported over 1,650 deaths since the war resumed in March. At least 24 Palestinians were killed in Israeli strikes across Gaza on Wednesday, mostly in Gaza City. The majority of those killed were children and women from the Hassouna family.
The UN warns that 69% of the territory is under active military evacuation orders, with around 500,000 people newly displaced without a safe place to go. Israel claims it has killed “hundreds of terrorists” in strikes, while designating 30% of Gaza as an operational security perimeter.
Israel’s policy remains focused on securing the release of all remaining hostages and building a bridge to defeat Hamas. However, this plan is met with skepticism from some, who argue that it prioritizes territory over hostage releases. The Israeli military has blocked humanitarian aid entry since March, sparking criticism from UN agencies.
The situation in Gaza continues to worsen, with shortages of food, medicine, and medical supplies exacerbating the crisis. MSF reported that two staff members were killed by Israeli troops in recent weeks and that critical medical supplies are scarce.
