Bowen Yang Bares All in The Wedding Banquet Remake

Bowen Yang stars as Chris in Andrew Ahn’s remake of Ang Lee’s 1993 queer cult classic, The Wedding Banquet. In a memorable scene, Yang’s character wakes up to horror after an unexpected hookup with his partner, Min (Han Gi-chan). As the scene unfolds, Yang fully commits to the moment, briefly flashing his bare butt.

Yang explains that he was hesitant about showing nudity in the film but ultimately trusted Ahn’s direction. “There was no hesitation in the end because it just felt so integral,” Yang says of the scene. The remake remains true to Lee’s original while incorporating modern sensibilities.

The story follows Min, a closeted heir working on a visa that will soon expire. When Chris rejects his marriage proposal, Min hatches a plan with their friends Angela (Kelly Marie Tran) and Lee (Lily Gladstone). Chaos ensues when Min’s grandmother visits from Korea and insists on throwing the ultimate wedding banquet.

Yang praises Ahn for accelerating the connection between the characters, making them feel like old friends. The cast’s chemistry is evident in the film, with Yang noting that audiences can tell they’re a familiar group of friends. For Yang, starring in the remake feels like a full-circle moment, as he had previously seen the original and was blown away by its impact on him.

The Wedding Banquet is set to release in theaters on April 18.
