Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman left behind a series of poignant letters to his wife Betsy Arakawa, revealing their loving and close relationship despite his battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
The notes, affectionately signed “Love G,” show the couple’s lighter side, with one letter poking fun at Hackman’s deteriorating memory. He wrote, “I’m going down to that building out past the hot water place where you sit and do whatever it is that people are supposed to do in such a building — maybe I’ll remember once I get down there.”
In another letter, he jokingly referred to a medical visit, saying, “I’m off to see the wizard, the wizard of ache pokie. She stabs me here, she stabs me there, she stabs me almost everywhere.” Despite his struggles, Hackman’s love for Arakawa remained strong.
Arakawa also left notes for Hackman, reminding him where she was going and what she was doing. One letter read, “yoga 12:30 p.m.” The couple’s three dogs, including one found dead in a crate due to dehydration and starvation, were also part of their loving life together.
The Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office recently released new evidence from the death investigation, including the letters, body camera video, and an environmental assessment. A judge had previously blocked the release of records, but ruled that they could be unsealed as long as they did not show the couple’s bodies.
