US Extends Funding for Cyber Vulnerability Database

In a last-minute reversal, the US government has extended funding for the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures database by 11 months. The move comes after widespread criticism from the cybersecurity community, who had feared a disruption to critical services.

The database, which catalogues cyber weaknesses, allows IT administrators to quickly identify and respond to bugs and hacks. The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) said the funding extension was necessary to ensure “critical CVE services” would not be disrupted.

Industry experts had opposed the initial plan to cut funding, citing the importance of the service in fighting cyber threats. A new website has emerged, claiming to offer an alternative to the existing database, but its intentions are unclear.

The extension is seen as a victory for the cybersecurity community, who had rallied behind the database to avoid a potential lapse in critical services. The decision comes amid broader cuts to government spending under President Donald Trump’s administration.
