The Hawaii Department of Health has confirmed its seventh dengue case this year, with the latest one being a travel-related case on Oahu. This brings the total number of cases in the state to seven, with six more reported on Oahu and one on Maui.
According to health officials, the affected individual was exposed to the virus while traveling in an area where dengue is common. The Health Department has deployed teams to implement mosquito control measures in the affected area.
Dengue is a viral illness spread by mosquitoes that can be transmitted from an infected person to a mosquito and then to another person. Symptoms include fever, severe headaches, nausea, vomiting, muscle and joint pain, and rash, which typically last two to seven days.
While severe illness can occur, most people recover within a week. Anyone planning to travel to an area with dengue risk is vulnerable, according to health officials. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises travelers to areas with risk of dengue to prevent mosquito bites by using insect repellent and wearing protective clothing.
Residents are advised to seek medical advice from a healthcare provider if symptoms develop within two weeks after a trip.
