Ukrainian troops launched a counterattack against Russian forces near the city of Kupyansk in the Kharkiv region. The Russians had crossed the Oskil River and entered the village of Dvorichna, prompting Ukrainian fighters to retreat but regroup outside the village.
Soldiers describe being outgunned by Russian drones, which circle overhead day and night, making it difficult to build defensive positions quickly enough before they are targeted. “Each of our drone pilot units faces five to six enemy pilot units,” said a soldier named Petro. The Russians also use antipersonnel mines to clear paths used by Ukrainian soldiers.
Despite being outnumbered, Ukrainian forces remain determined to fight back. They have been using their own drones to counter Russian unmanned aircraft and are prepared for a long and intense battle. One soldier noted, “When the soldiers escaped from advancing forces, one of them told me: ‘No worries, we can still slam the door in their faces.'”
