Jake Paul will face former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in a highly anticipated bout on June 28 at Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The 10-round fight, which will be contested at a weight limit of 200 pounds and air on DAZN pay-per-view, marks the next step in Paul’s pursuit of becoming a world champion.
Paul, 28, has been vocal about his desire to face top contenders and has already defeated former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson. He believes that Chavez Jr.’s recent struggles make him a suitable opponent for his first world title fight.
“I’ve stepped into the ring every time I’ve been here,” Paul said in a statement. “Now I’m going against a former champion who conman Canelo couldn’t finish.”
Chavez Jr., 39, has experienced an uneven career since losing the WBC title to Sergio Martinez in 2012. Despite a recent win over MMA fighter Uriah Hall, he believes that his issues are behind him and will be able to turn back “El Gallo” for this fight.
The co-main event will feature unified cruiserweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez defending his titles against former unified champion Yuniel Dorticos. Golden Boy Promotions is set to partner with Most Valuable Promotions and DAZN to bring the blockbuster night to fans worldwide.
“This is a massive event from Most Valuable Promotions, with some Oscar De La Hoya seasoning added to the show,” said MVP co-founder Nakisa Bidarian. “We’re thrilled to be working with Jake Paul, Oscar De La Hoya, and DAZN to deliver the biggest and most exciting events in boxing.”
