Tesla Faces Lawsuit Over Alleged Odometer Tampering

A California man claims that Tesla altered his vehicle’s odometer to end his warranty period prematurely, resulting in significant extra mileage readings and additional repair costs. Nyree Hinton purchased a used 2020 Model Y with 36,772 miles in February 2023 but noticed problems with the suspension, which led to multiple visits to the dealership.

Hinton claims that Tesla’s odometer was underestimating his actual mileage, particularly after he changed his commuting route, resulting in an average of 72.35 miles per day compared to his reported daily average. By July 2023, Hinton’s vehicle had reached the 50,000-mile limit, and the warranty had expired.

Hinton has sued Tesla, alleging breach of contract, negligent misrepresentation, and unjust enrichment. He also requests class-action status, citing numerous odometer complaints on Tesla forums and Reddit. The lawsuit comes as Tesla faces criticism and protests over various issues, including a stock price slump and controversy surrounding Elon Musk’s inauguration appearance.
