A fireball lit up the skies over Mexico City, sparking awe in many. Videos of a glowing ball traveling across the country’s plains, volcanoes, and small towns quickly turned into memes on social media.
The bright object was initially thought to be a meteorite, but scientists later identified it as a bolide, an exceptionally bright fireball that can be seen over a wide area. According to NASA, bolides are meteors that flash with a tail and emit light due to intense pressure as they enter the Earth’s atmosphere.
The bolide was about 1.5 meters long and posed no threat to the public. Dr. Mario RodrÃguez, an expert in space science, explained that unlike meteorites, which impact the ground, bolides disintegrate in the atmosphere.
