Amazon to Replace Android with Own Vega OS on Fire TV Devices

Amazon plans to transition its Fire TV devices from Android to its own Vega OS later this year. The switch means developers must rebuild apps from scratch, a move that will break compatibility with existing Android apps.

Although some Echo devices already use Vega OS, no Fire TV device has adopted it yet. However, Amazon is expected to release the first TV streaming device powered by Vega OS in 2025 and is courting major publishers to bring their apps to the platform.

Streaming providers must develop new apps from the ground up due to a lack of porting support at this time. Some developers are already on board, including Paramount, Rakuten, and the BBC’s UKTV subsidiary. Amazon’s own apps, such as Prime Video, will also be available.

The move appears to follow an update to Fire TV’s developer documentation, which confirmed the device would run Android 14. This suggests that Amazon may make the switch to Vega OS on streaming sticks and boxes first, while keeping Fire TV-branded TVs running on Android for now.
