Overwatch 2 Introduces Innovative Stadium Mode

Overwatch 2 is set to launch its most exciting new mode since its initial announcement in 2014 – Stadium. This best-of-7 mode allows players to upgrade their Heroes with more powerful abilities across multiple rounds, transforming the core gameplay of Overwatch.

In Stadium, teams of five earn Cash each round based on eliminations, healing, and damage mitigation. They can use this Cash to purchase items that improve survivability or damage output. Players can also unlock new abilities, like Moira’s three-orbs or Reinhardt’s shield into a healing barrier.

To create Stadium’s unique Hero builds and abilities, Senior Game Designer Dylan Snyder explained that the team aimed to push player fantasy, play expression, and strategic gameplay to their limits while maintaining competitive integrity. The Armory serves as an easy-to-read way to spend Stadium Cash on Heroes.

When asked about popular Builds and abilities, Snyder mentioned a Double Helix build for Soldier: 76 that can be devastating against opponents who haven’t upgraded survivability. Another favorite is Ana’s Nano Boost, which boosts entire teams through walls.

However, Snyder was surprised by the popularity of Junker Queen’s Carnage swing ability, allowing her to swing the axe more often and turn it into a leaping strike.

To help players succeed in Stadium, Snyder advised using suggested Example builds and testing things out in the Practice Range. The team also hopes to add more abilities and items in future Seasons.

Stadium launches on April 22 with initial Heroes, and will receive new content every Season.
