American Idol Singer Doug Kiker’s Ex-Fiancée Speaks Out on His Struggle with Addiction Before Death

American Idol alum Doug Kiker’s ex-fiancée Valerie Cook is sharing her side of the singer’s struggles with addiction in the month following his sudden death. The City and County of Denver Medical Examiner confirmed that Kiker died from an opioid overdose on March 10, but Cook reveals that he had a long history of drug abuse.

“He had dabbled in a few different things, but all of this is kind of shocking,” Cook shared exclusively with Us Weekly. Kiker’s death was ruled an accident due to the combined toxic effects of fentanyl, methadone, and amphetamines, with recent cocaine use. The 32-year-old singer rose to fame after appearing on season 18 of American Idol in 2020.

Cook, who shares two daughters with Kiker and lives in Alabama, revealed that she was notified about his death by an investigator and had not heard from him since their breakup four years ago. She also expressed concern for the children’s well-being, stating “I never reached out… I thought it was safer for the kids.”

Kiker’s family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral expenses. His siblings have paid tribute to his memory on social media, saying he “was sooo loved and will be missed by so many!” Cook’s revelations about Kiker’s struggles with addiction serve as a reminder of the devastating impact it can have on those affected.
