Power Restored to 98% of Puerto Rico Customers After Island-Wide Blackout

A power outage that affected nearly the entire island of Puerto Rico has been resolved, with crews restoring electricity to over 98% of customers. The blackout, which occurred on Wednesday, was caused by a transmission line failure that triggered protective shutdowns at generators across the island.

More than 1.45 million customers were left without power, while over 400,000 remained without water. However, Governor Jenniffer González reported that all affected customers have now received electricity, with only about 21,400 remaining without power due to unrelated issues.

Luma Energy, which oversees the island’s power transmission and distribution, warned that some customers may still experience temporary outages despite the restoration efforts. The governor acknowledged that Puerto Rico’s power system is inadequate, stating that it was a “shame for our people” that they have such an insufficient system.

The blackout marks the second major outage in less than four months, with a previous incident occurring on New Year’s Eve. Authorities are investigating the cause of the transmission line failure and are expected to receive a preliminary report soon.
