JK Rowling has sparked widespread backlash after celebrating a recent UK Supreme Court ruling that defined women as “biological sex” under equality legislation. The court’s decision, made on April 16, effectively means trans women with gender recognition certificates are not protected from discrimination as women under Britain’s Equality Act.
Rowling took to social media to express her support for the ruling, using hashtags #SupremeCourt and #WomensRights. She also donated £70,000 ($93,000) to For Women Scotland, a campaign group that argued the case before the court. Critics argue the decision could lead to discrimination against trans people, particularly in employment issues.
Several celebrities, including Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, from the Harry Potter film universe have denounced Rowling’s anti-trans views. Nicola Coughlan, an actress who appeared in Bridgerton, has also spoken out against Rowling, calling her comments “stomach-churning” and “disgusting”.
Rowling previously sparked controversy with her comments on International Asexuality Day, calling it “International Fake Oppression Day”. She had also been accused of spreading a false narrative about Algerian Olympic boxer Imane Khelif’s identity.
Despite facing backlash, Rowling remains involved in the new Harry Potter TV show, serving as an executive producer. HBO has defended her involvement, saying she was “very involved” in the production process. The show is currently casting child actors to play the main characters and features a set adult cast, including John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore.
