Kathy Bates’ New Take on Matlock Gets Renewed for Season 2

Kathy Bates is back as the titular character in CBS’ Matlock, a new adaptation of the iconic ’80s series starring Andy Griffith. The show’s creator, Jennie Snyder Urman, aims to capture the essence of Griffith’s original while infusing it with freshness and a modern tone.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bates revealed that the new series differs from its predecessor in several ways. Unlike Griffith’s episodic format, Matlock features a serialized approach with ongoing storylines throughout each episode. This allows for more complex character development and exploration of timely topics.

Season 1 was a huge success, with an average of 17 million viewers across broadcast and streaming platforms. The finale introduced several cliffhangers that set the stage for season 2, including Matty’s (Bates) complicated relationship with her ex-partner Olympia (Marshall).

Urman teases exciting developments for Billy (David Marshall), a junior partner who finds himself in an unexpected love triangle with Simone (Andrea Londo) and Claudia (Bella Ortiz). The actress also hints at new pairings, including the unlikely coupling between Billy and Julian (played by actor who will be revealed).

The Matlock season 2 cast includes Bates, Marshall, Ortiz, Londo, and several other recurring characters. While there’s no official release date yet, Deadline reports that the show is planned for the 2025-26 broadcast season.

New episodes of Matlock are now streaming on Paramount+, alongside all nine seasons of Andy Griffith’s OG Matlock.
