Michael B. Jordan’s Sinners Scores Big at Easter Weekend Box Office

Ryan Coogler’s highly anticipated movie Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan, has found success at the Easter weekend box office. The film, which premiered on Friday with $19.2 million from 3,308 theaters, including Imax screens, took the top spot over fellow Warner Bros. release A Minecraft Movie.

Minecraft, however, is expected to regain its lead over Sinners on Saturday. Despite this, Sinners has shown strong start numbers, raking in an estimated $40-42 million for its first weekend. The film’s production cost was a significant $90 million, but it appears to be paying off.

Sinners boasts the highest Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score of Coogler’s career at 97 percent and has impressed audiences with high CinemaScore ratings. The movie is playing well to an ethnically diverse audience, with Black moviegoers making up nearly half of all ticket buyers so far.

Coogler made Sinners entirely under Warner Bros., which could be a factor in the film’s success. If Sinners continues to perform well, it could give Coogler and his co-producer Pamela Abdy their second win in a row after several high-profile misses. The film has also been praised for its originality, thematic depth, and genre fluidity.

Other Easter weekend releases include A King of Kings animated pic, which is expected to earn $17 million, and Rami Malek’s spy drama The Amateur, which is projected to gross $7-8 million.
