Japan Turns to Foreign Rice Amid Price Surge

Japan is seeing a shift in its stance on domestic rice as consumers turn to foreign alternatives amid a severe price surge. Tokyo restaurant owner Arata Hirano has switched to American Calrose rice, citing higher prices and lower costs compared to domestic grains. This trend may signal a significant change in mindset for Japanese businesses and consumers.

Wholesale prices for domestic rice have increased by 70% over the past year, with crops affected by extreme heat and a tourism boom adding to demand. Businesses are now betting that Japan’s discerning palates will adapt to cheaper foreign alternatives. Supermarket giant Aeon has started selling an American-Japanese blend, while restaurant chains Matsuya and Colowide serve pure American rice.

Japan traditionally limits tariff-free imports of staple rice to 100,000 metric tons per year, with the US accounting for a significant portion. However, with US President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Japan’s rice imports sparking controversy, policymakers are reassessing their stance. A panel advising the finance ministry has proposed expanding imports of staple rice, suggesting that lifting the cap could help stabilize supply.

Despite these changes, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s Liberal Democratic Party is unlikely to risk angering farmers ahead of upper house elections in July. The issue remains complex, with supply concerns and potential trade implications. As Japan explores alternative options, consumers are embracing foreign rice without hesitation, citing price increases and the desire for cheaper alternatives.
