US President Donald Trump has shared his thoughts on egg prices, claiming they are down 87%. However, data from the Department of Agriculture shows that the average wholesale price of eggs increased to $3.13 as of April 19.
Trump made the statement during a press conference at the White House on Friday, April 18, where he congratulated Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins on her new role. The president said egg prices are “down” but refused to provide any specific numbers.
In reality, egg prices have been steadily increasing since January, with a dozen eggs costing $4.95 and nearly $6 in February. The Department of Agriculture stated that while price levels have eased compared to early-year highs, they still remain above what’s considered normal for purchasing needs.
Trump had promised during his 2024 campaign to bring down grocery prices but acknowledged after taking office that he has limited control over sources of inflation.
