Southwest Airlines Adds New Florida Flights Amid Lays-offs and Changes

Southwest Airlines is expanding its operations in Florida with new routes, while also making significant changes to its business model. The airline has announced plans to add approximately 1,750 employees to be laid off, or about 15% of its corporate positions, as part of a three-year transformation plan called “Southwest. Even Better” aimed at increasing profitability and better serving loyal customers.

The layoffs will primarily affect roles at Southwest’s headquarters and maintenance facility in Dallas, starting April 22. The company is facing pressure from the US Department of Transportation over flight delays and from investors over costs. Despite this, Southwest remains committed to expanding its presence in Florida with new routes to Orlando International Airport (MCO), Miami International Airport (MIA), Palm Beach International Airport (PBI), and Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ).

New routes will include twice-daily flights starting August 2025. The airline has also announced the end of its open seating policy, with assigned seating expected to begin in 2026. Additionally, Southwest is introducing new baggage fees for passengers, effective May 28.

The airline’s expansion plans come as it seeks to improve profitability and better serve its most loyal customers. With the addition of new routes and changes to its business model, Southwest aims to solidify its position in the Florida market and beyond.
