Meta Fights FTC’s Weak Antitrust Lawsuit Over Instagram and WhatsApp Acquisitions

Meta is set to begin trial on Monday, April 14, as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) attempts to undo its earlier approval of the acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp over a decade ago. The FTC claims that these deals harmed competition and consumers, but Meta disputes this assertion.

In reality, Meta’s investments have made both Instagram and WhatsApp more reliable and secure, with billions of dollars in funding transforming Instagram into a platform used by over 2 billion monthly active users. WhatsApp has also become an end-to-end encrypted messaging service, empowering its 2 billion users to communicate worldwide.

The FTC’s claims are baseless and ignore the reality of the market. By artificially defining a market that only includes Facebook and Instagram competing with Snapchat and MeWe, the FTC is attempting to prove a flawed narrative. In reality, Meta faces strong competition from TikTok and YouTube, with market share significantly below 30%.

This trial would undermine American business and waste taxpayer dollars. The FTC’s case sends a message that no deal is ever final, and businesses will be punished for innovating. Moreover, this ill-conceived lawsuit comes at the same time as efforts to save Chinese-owned TikTok.

Make no mistake, this case isn’t about censorship or content decisions. It’s about the reality of competition in today’s market. Meta looks forward to presenting its case and defending its investments in these successful platforms.
