The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has confirmed the state’s first measles case of 2025, involving a child under 4 years old who recently traveled internationally. This case serves as a reminder of the contagious nature of measles and the importance of vaccination.
According to VDH, the patient was at two potential exposure sites in Woodbridge and Fredericksburg on April 15-16. Health officials advise anyone who attended these locations and has never received a measles-containing vaccine to contact their healthcare provider immediately.
Symptoms of measles can appear within 21 days after exposure and include fever, cough, and a rash. If symptoms are noticed, individuals should isolate themselves and seek medical attention if necessary. For those with two doses of the measles vaccine or born before 1957, no action is required. However, receiving a second vaccine dose is recommended to achieve optimal protection.
VDH urges Virginians, particularly travelers, to check their vaccination status and consult with their healthcare provider about getting vaccinated.
