The FBI has issued a warning about the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) by scammers to improve the effectiveness and believability of their online fraud schemes. These schemes range from romance scams, investment scams, and job hiring schemes, with AI-generated text, images, audio, voice cloning, and videos being used to deceive targets.
The agency has shared several examples of AI-assisted fraud campaigns, including the use of AI-generated social media profiles for social engineering, impersonating authority figures, and creating fake promotional materials for investment scams. The FBI advises identifying and defending against these schemes by looking out for subtle imperfections in images and videos, unnatural tone or word choice in calls, and verifying callers through official channels.
To protect yourself, the FBI recommends creating a secret word with family to verify identity, limiting public content of your image and voice, verifying callers, and never sharing sensitive information with strangers. Additionally, report any suspected scams or victimization to IC3 and include all relevant information when submitting a report.
