DR Congo Suspends Kabila’s Party Over Alleged M23 Links

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has suspended the party of former President Joseph Kabila, accusing him of ties to the Rwandan-backed M23 rebel group. The move comes after reports that Kabila returned to the country and traveled to Goma, a city occupied by the rebels.

Kabila’s People’s Party for Reconstruction and Democracy (PPRD) was suspended due to its “ambiguous attitude” towards the M23 occupation of DRC territory. Authorities also ordered the seizure of his assets, accusing him of high treason.

The suspension follows Kabila’s recent return to the country after spending two years in South Africa. He has been accused of preparing an insurrection and backing an alliance with M23, which has led to violence and displacement of thousands of people.

DRC President Felix Tshisekedi has called for peace talks between the government and M23 rebels, but they have been postponed due to Kabila’s suspension. The UN and regional governments have accused Rwanda of supporting M23, which the country denies.

Kabila ruled the DRC from 2001 to 2019 and has not commented on the accusations against him. His spokesperson has said he will address the nation soon.
