DHL Stops High-Value US Deliveries Amid Tariff Hurdles

DHL Express has suspended deliveries to the US worth over $800 due to increased customs red tape following the introduction of Donald Trump’s new tariff regime. The company will temporarily halt shipments from all countries, while business-to-business deliveries may also experience delays.

Previously, packages up to $2,500 could enter the US with minimal paperwork. However, tighter customs checks have lowered the threshold, causing a surge in formal clearances. DHL is handling these increases around the clock but warns that shipments over $800 may face multi-day delays.

The White House plans to close a loophole allowing low-value packages from China and Hong Kong to enter the US without duties on May 2, which will impact companies like Shein and Temu. These firms have warned of price hikes due to recent changes in global trade rules and tariffs. The Trump administration claims that Chinese shippers hide illicit substances in shipments, but Beijing disputes this, stating that China has strictest drug policies in the world.

Other countries are also responding to the US tariffs. Hong Kong Post recently suspended packages sent to the US by sea, and will stop accepting parcels for America from April 27. The company described the US actions as “reasonable, bullying” and “imposing tariffs abusively”.
