Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has formed its own government, two years into a power struggle with the Sudanese army that has left tens of thousands killed and millions homeless. The RSF declared “the establishment of the Government of Peace and Unity,” a broad civilian coalition.
The move comes after months of fighting between the rival factions, with the SAF regaining control of Khartoum in one of its major losses since the start of the war. However, the RSF claims to have retaken control of key areas in Darfur, including the Zamzam camp for displaced people, where clashes left over 300 people killed and at least 400,000 displaced.
RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo says his militia is “building the only realistic future for Sudan” as it pursues autonomy from the SAF. The declaration complicates peace efforts, which have been hindered by disagreements between DAGalo and former ally Abdel Fattah al-Burhan over how to restore civilian rule.
The RSF’s move has raised concerns about the escalating conflict and its humanitarian impact. The United Nations describes the crisis as the world’s “most devastating humanitarian and displacement crisis.” The situation in Sudan remains volatile, with both sides refusing to back down from their competing claims.
