Whisky Gaming Front-End for Wine Fades Away

Whisky, a popular front-end tool for running Windows games on macOS, is no longer receiving updates. The 18-year-old developer behind the project, Isaac Marovitz, hopes users will switch to CodeWeavers’ CrossOver product instead.

Marovitz believes Whisky has not significantly contributed to the Wine community and faces stiff competition from CrossOver. “Practically zero” of his work on Whisky has led to game fixes, which he attributes to a limited pool of developers with expertise in C, Wine, Windows, and macOS.

While Marovitz had contact with CodeWeavers during development, they neither instructed nor discouraged him. However, observing the community’s attitude, he realized CrossOver could be threatened by Whisky’s viability.
