Witness the Lyrid Meteor Shower Tonight

The Lyrid meteor shower peaks tonight, April 21st-22nd, producing anywhere between 10 and 100 shooting stars per hour. For Americans and Europeans, it’s an excellent viewing opportunity due to the constellation Lyra being high in the northern sky.

The Earth crosses the path of a comet, Thatcher Comet, which forms the Lyrids meteor stream. This event occurs annually, but the Moon’s phases can affect visibility. Happily, this year, a waning crescent will be below the horizon by 01:35 UTC, minimizing light pollution from the Moon.

As you watch the meteors, Lyra and its guide star Vega will rise higher in the sky. By midnight in the Northern Hemisphere, they’ll be high enough for shooting stars to appear across the entire sky, promising a better show. Mark your calendars for tonight’s celestial display.
