Google’s remedies trial began Monday in Washington, D.C., following a judge’s ruling in August that the company has held a monopoly in its core market of internet search. The Department of Justice is seeking to break up Google’s Chrome and Android units, while Google plans to argue that splitting apart would compromise national security and innovation.
The trial will determine the consequences of Google’s guilty verdict from August. Google argues that breaking up its units would introduce cybersecurity risks, increase device costs, and hinder American innovation in artificial intelligence (AI). The company claims it is essential for the US to take on China in the global AI battle.
Google faces increased scrutiny from the Justice Department, which has accused the company of using its market dominance to insulate itself from competition. The DOJ’s proposal would require Google to divest its Chrome browser unit and open its search data to rivals.
Other tech companies, including Meta, Amazon, and Uber, are also facing antitrust lawsuits. Meta is being sued for allegedly monopolizing social networking, while Amazon faces a lawsuit over alleged monopoly on e-commerce. The Trump administration’s FTC has also filed cases against Uber and other companies for deceptive billing practices.
The trial will end on May 9, with Judge Amit Mehta expected to make his ruling in August. Google plans to appeal the decision if it is adverse.
