Lithuania is strengthening its border with Poland through a second upgrade in the Suwałki Gap, a strategic choke point seen as a potential target for any Russian attack on the European Union and NATO. The 100-kilometer-wide gap, shared with Belarus and Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave, is considered one of NATO’s most vulnerable points due to its critical role as a vital land corridor linking the Baltic states to the alliance.
According to Lithuanian Deputy Defense Minister Tomas Godliauskas, these roads are “critical to us from a security and defense perspective” as part of their civil-military planning for allied support during a crisis. The upgrades aim to fortify this area’s defenses and enhance the region’s overall security in light of rising tensions between Russia and Western nations.
